Description
From Orthodox Jew growing up in Philadelphia to mild-mannered mathematician in academia to legendary atheist activist in the heart of today’s Republican South, Herb Silverman has always been outside the mainstream of American culture, politics, and religion. From his naturalistic vantage point, Herb writes about the most pressing issues of our day, including those related to war, peace, patriotism, religion, science, politics, race, sex, church-state separation, debates and discussions, and more. In this entertaining and thought-provoking book, he includes some of his best written work from the Washington Post, Huffington Post, The Humanist, Free Inquiry, Freethought Today, and other publications. They are grouped topically, rather than chronologically, making it easier to focus on specific issues. Silverman may see himself as an atheist stranger in a strange religious land, but thanks in part to his work as an activist and author, those with naturalistic viewpoints are no longer such strangers in this increasingly less religious land.
About the Author
Herb Silverman is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the College of Charleston, founder of the Secular Coalition for America, and founder of Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry in Charleston, South Carolina. He ran for Governor of South Carolina in 1990 to challenge a state law that required religious belief to hold public office. After an eight-year battle, Herb won a unanimous Supreme Court decision, which struck down this religious requirement. Herb has appeared in many debates, including one at the Oxford Union in England.
