תינוקות מפגינים סימנים של מוסריות אף לפני שהתנסו בעולם התנסות של ממש.
מחקר מוסריות תינוקות הראה לאחרונה שהחל מגיל 14 חודש תינוקות עוזרים ספונטנית לאחרים ללא ציפייה לתגמול. (Warneken & Tomasello, 2007).
בעשור האחרון חלה התפוצצות מחקרים של מוסריות בתינוקות. מחקרים ניסיוניים מראים כעת כי תינוקות מגלים נטיות מולדות לעזור לאחרים.
הביטו במחקר שנערך בתינוקות עם בובות: בובה אחת עוזרת (לדמות אחת). בובה אחרת מסכלת (דמות אחרת). התינוקות מתבוננים בהתנהגות המיטיבה והמכשילה. תינוקות מגיבים אחרת לשתי בובות אלה כבר בגיל שלושה חודשים.
גם תינוקות בני ששה חודשים מגיבים חיובית לדמויות העוזרות לאחרים. בגיל 18 חודש, הילדים עצמם עוזרים בקלות לאחרים להשיג את מטרותיהם. פרו-חברתיות הודגמה בילדים כבר בגיל שנתיים. וכן הלאה.
למרות תפוצתה הנרחבת, האמונה המופרכת שבני האדם נולדים אנוכיים-ביסודם, ואח"כ נעשים בהדרגה מוסריים באמצעות לקחי הדת, חסרת ראיות. לדוגמה, בסדרת ניסויים אחת, אדם מושיט ידו לחפץ מסוים ולא מגיע. רוב התינוקות מעבירים לו ברצון את החפץ. אפילו בני 14 חודשים נחלצים לסייע. במהלך מבדקים ניסויים עזרו ילדים לאחרים תוך 6.9 שניות בממוצע.
התפתחות מוקדמת של התנהגות מוסרית מבהירה מדוע אמונות והשקפות עולם אינן נחוצות להופעת מוסריות. שיתוף-פעולה, שיפוט מוסרי, שוויוניות, הערכה חברתית וייזום עזרה לזולת הן נטיות מולדות ואוניברסאליות.
