Ahlak evrimle kazanılmış olduğundan, tüm toplumlarda ve kültürlerde var.

Bunlar bilinen hiç bir istisna olmaksızın Tüm insan kültürlerinde evrensel olarak meydana geldiği için, evrensel ahlak burada görüntülendiği gibi büyük olasılıkla psikolojik fenomen olarak gelişmiştir (Brown, 1991).

Antropolog Donald E. Brown insaoğlunun ahlaki birliğini keşfetmeği beklemiyordu, amma o bunu yaptı.

Bilim adamı tüm nörolojik normal insanlarda ortak davranışsal veya bilişsel özellikleri hangı kültüre ait olduklarına bakmayarak arıyordu.onun amacı bütün evrensel insan değerlerini  toplama idi.

Onun projesi her kültürde mevcut sabit etik desenleri ortaya çıkramakdı.

Tüm kıtada din ve inanç sistemleri renkli ve çeşitli idi. Bununla birlikte her birinde belirli davranışlar yasaklanmıştır. Tecavüz mu? – yasak. Cinayet mi? yasak? – hepsi yasak.
